Experiencing Education: 1896-2012

Second Edition

The University of Chicago Laboratory Schools were founded in 1896 by John Dewey as a way to apply and test his groundbreaking theories of education. Now, more than a century later, Dewey's approach to education is emulated the world over, and the Laboratory Schools are internationally renowned for providing students with a truly first-rate pre-collegiate education.

Originally published to mark the schools' centennial, "Experiencing Education" tells the history of the Laboratory Schools through an engaging blend of words and images. This new edition brings the story fully up to date, revealing how Dewey's thinking has been used, adapted, and updated as the classroom environment has changed and the schools have grown. Each chapter includes a visually engaging timeline highlighting important moments at Lab in the context of events unfolding at the University of Chicago and around the world. The resulting volume is a testament to an influential and still-vibrant institution and its remarkable contribution to the University of Chicago, Hyde Park, and education in general.
